Hi team!
We hope that your July is treating you well. Winter has certainly taken hold across the country and it’s that time of year that we all start daydreaming of Spring and some sunshine. Especially those of you that are braving the cold and wet to fill trailers with new herd members!
On that note, we are running a fun cute calf photo competition until the end of August, so see more details below to win an awesome prize from our mates at Kaiwaka Clothing.
Across the Piako branches we are gearing up for our Spring deliveries, boats are arriving with big Fendt’s, Fergie’s and Valtra’s for our contractor customers, and we have several high spec farmer tractors arriving too, ready to find their place in the paddocks mowing and loading bales.
Our harvest machinery manufacturers are releasing their Spring sales programs and the team at Briggs & Straton have reached out with some great offers for dealing with the lawn when the grass takes off, all good signs that it won’t be too long, and the days will be longer and the grass greener.
Share your best calving photo for a chance to win a Kaiwaka SealTEX kit! To enter, simply post your favorite calving photo and tag us and Kaiwaka Clothing or email us marketing@piako.co.nz your best calf photo to us by the end of August. We can't wait to see your amazing photos. Good luck!
A huge thanks go to the team at Kaiwaka Clothing for providing this epic prize for our photo competition. We reached out to Kaiwaka because of their amazing reputation, we didn’t want to go giving away inferior gear and have one of our great customers dripping wet out in the paddock!

Combi feeders are a brilliant idea, one machine, multiple feed types and configurations. However, the challenge has always been delivery. Sure, the machine can handle everything from Beets to Silage bales, but getting the feed in front of the cow’s faces isn’t quite as easy! McIntosh have sorted the issue out with their new Combi Pro and its very fancy conveyor.
McIntosh is renowned for its impeccable build quality; we deal with some massive farming operations and their gear gets a serious amount of work and that’s why for those real demanding tasks we fit them out with a McIntosh. Looking at their new Combi Pro nothing has changed, the engineering is awesome and after having a quick glance you know they didn’t cut any corners when it came to design and using the right materials for construction.
The feature that really stands out, which also separates the Combi Pro from any other combi-feeder on the market is that conveyor. The 1500mm wide conveyor with its 600mm extension arm gets you out plenty far enough to get over fence lines, or into high trough situations. This combination also offers a massive range of flexibility in regard to the angle of the conveyor, making finding the right position for each feed type easy.
The conveyor is super clean, giving very little opportunity for feed to get hung up and avoids putting unwanted pressure on pivot points etc. The two big rams on either side make lifting and lowering a simple procedure and keeps everything nice and straight. Again, McIntosh don’t muck around when it comes to building things properly so a single ram on one side like some other manufacturers do, just doesn’t meet the design standards these guys set themselves.
Alongside the pivot point of the conveyor there’s some neat little concertina panels that extend as the conveyor is lifted or lowered, keeping wayward feed out of the way of the rams and off the ground. It may not seem like much but little touches like this can save a lot of hassle and expensive parts bills later down the track. The conveyor is also fitted with an automatic adjustment system for the chains, with the constant up and down motion of the conveyor it's easy for chains to stretch and become slack, on other machines that is… not so with the Combi Pro.
On the conveyor the bars and teeth are as you see on McIntosh’s proven bale feeders. The flat face of the teeth on the sturdy bars means that you tear into feed quick, especially round bales. A nice consistent feed is important to keeping the whole herd in good condition, but it’s been something that’s not been easy in the past.
Getting the feed to the cross conveyor is done by way of heavy duty 13mm chains, these two chains give a consistent pressure and means less chance of doing damage with an inadvertent jam in the floor. The team at McIntosh decided this was a better way to go over the hydraulic ram option with a more even feed, no cavity in the floor for feed to drop through and simple adjustment.
The 5mm thick floor itself is nice and flat and at 2.48m wide it gives plenty of room for bales to stack in and shift around as they make their way to walk the plank. Loading a wagon nice and even with full bales isn’t an easy task so it's nice that with the Combi Pro you can basically dump the feed in, regardless of what it is and let the machine deal with it itself.
Available in four sizes ranging from 14.8 to 21.3 cubic metres the Combi Pro will find a home on most farms, and I can only imagine that’s where they will last for quite some time given the build quality, not so good for our business but great for yours!
