March 2024

March,

Evening! We hope you’ve had a great day and an even better month of March!

Our crew has been busy this month with Field Days in Northland and the Central Districts Field Days in Fielding. The Northland crew had a good show, enjoying the chance to catch up with everyone and sell a bit of gear. Everyone up that way commented on how good the season has been, same as much of the North Island so it's good to get a shot of positivity.

We had a good showing at Central Districts too, educating everyone on what our awesome Reiter Mergers do and how they work. Doing loops around the big machine on the back of our fancy Valtra kept the boys warm in the very chilly conditions on the Friday! The weather is certainly changing, we even had a frost at home on Thursday!

We hope April treats you well, and don’t forget if you go to crank up the heater in the tractor and no one's home, be sure to give one of our workshops a call and we will sort it out, or better yet… give one of the sales guys a ring! There's still cheap finance around!!!

Driving around our neck of the woods, you definitely don’t have to go far to see a big red Fergie out in the field earning its keep…. It’s a beautiful thing!

But now, when you head to the golf course, drop the kids off at school, have drinks at a mate’s lifestyle block or need to clean out a calf shed, you’re just as likely to see the triple triangle badge doing the hard mahi.

Massey Fergusons new range of compact tractors are on the ground in NZ so make some room in the shed for this small, framed tractor that Massey says has BIG DNA.

The new models come in two series, the 1800 and the 2800. The horsepower ranges from 34.5hp in the 1835E all the way up to 60.3hp in the 2860M. As well as a broad range of horsepower options there are two spec levels in the new compacts, the ‘E’ and the ‘M’.

The ‘E’ ranges from 34.5hp to 57.3hp. The 1835E and 1840E run turbo charged, 1.83litre 3-cylinder, liquid cooled engines and the larger 2850E and 2860E models are pushed along by a 2.43litre, turbo charged 4-cylinder engine. The transmission is a very simple to operate 3 speed hydrostatic, so if you are capable of handling a ride-on mower then you're good to go on the new ‘E’ series. If you aren’t into the hydrostatic transmission idea, then there is another option with an 8x8 synchro shuttle which is available on select models.

Size wise, the1800 machine is around 1300kg, so for a small tractor they are obviously built very well, the weight of the machine gives it a theoretical rear lift capacity of 1 tonne.

The two 2800 bigger brothers are 1855kg so that puts the theoretical rear linkage capacity up to 1200kg. Plenty for almost any job I can think of around a large lifestyle block or small farm.

Right across the range the layout is really nice and is very commonsensical, I don’t find myself searching for the right lever to pull which is nice. Also another thing that stood out is that the bonnet and guards are all steel! It really is like a ‘proper’ tractor. I guess that’s what happens when one of the world’s biggest high horsepower tractor manufacturers wants a range of compacts, they aren’t going to slap the badge on just anything and tarnish their reputation are they?

The ‘M’ series is the next step up in spec and comfort, there’s four models in the lineup and range from 35 to 60hp. The ‘M’ is available in both Cab and Rops models which is handy, a fancy seat, heating and aircon, and a very handy thumb throttle are all added features in the ‘M’. On top of this you can add additional hydraulics options and the ability to fit a mid-mount mowing deck making this a seriously versatile machine.

I can envisage plenty of these larger machines out on farm with a carryall on the rear picking up calves, cleaning out sheds and underpasses, honing around golf courses with a topper or being driven by a happy roadworks crew with a sweeper on the front. Pick your poison!

Of course, there’s different loader and tyre options so regardless of what your plans are there is bound to be a size, spec level and equipment option to suit your needs.

Oftentimes in this end of the tractor horsepower range it's not too hard to spot the shortcuts and sacrifices that have been made to meet the market, which is a fluffy way of saying making them cheap enough to be appealing on online auction sites.

Well, when I have a look at the new range of Masseys it's pretty clear the way they have met the market is by keeping the standard of engineering that everyone expects from Fergie, all they’ve done is shrunk it down to fit into a smaller shed. Massey Ferguson knows that their current customers demand quality, and that’s who will be buying this clever range of small horsepower gems.
